Tony Fouhse is a Canadian photographer. In 1954 he was born in Ottawa, Canada. His wide range of work consists of editorial and commercial photography. Throughout his 30-year career, he has received many international awards. Recently, he has gained attention for his portrait of individuals struggling with addiction. He says his key methodology is immersing himself in the human experience of his subjects. His work is fascinating; it is a depiction of the reality and humanity of his subject's struggles.
Live Through This shows the recovery process of Stephanie, a young women in Ottawa. Unlike most photographic portrayals of addiction, this goes deeper to explore the relationship with the photographer and subject. Live Through This is a collaborative effort between Tony Fouhse and Stephanie, a struggling heroin addict. It shows a raw look into her struggle for sobriety. What started off as another photo shoot of an addict turned into a symbiotic relationship- Stephanie receiving care, while Fouhse captures her experiences through his photography. Stephanie lived with Fouhse and his wife while getting clean where she received support overcoming her addiction.
Here Fouhse excels at capturing the raw essence of his subject. He provides interest by showing a jarring topic yet portrays this topic by showing the humanity. His work provides the viewer with an insight to understanding of the personal experience of the subject.
