Carra Roots - Weekly Artist Post

Viviane Sassen

Dutch born Viviane Sassen has a strong attachment to her home continent for three years Africa. Her family lived in Kenya and after awhile returned back to Europe. Viviane said that after her years in Africa she felt as though she didn’t belong in her home country. When opportunity arose she returned back to Africa and since then has been traveling from country to country capturing all that catches her eye. Not your average poor, malnutrition pictures that some others try to show, but the character of a people.

I really enjoy how she uses the patterns of different materials against or with nature. Whether it be a shadow flowers or actual leaves, she composes the image so well. She even thinks about the skin tone of her subjects and how they will compliment the vision of a photograph or how she could blend it in with something in the area. Lighting also plays a big part in how her photos turn out.

I’ve looked at her other series done and have started to think of how I could play with body form.
