1] what are the
artist’s technical choices?
Not knowing much
about his camera set up, the technical choices of his environments were well
thought out. Justin Bettman chose to
have very open environments that would have heavy foot traffic. By placing his subjects and created
surroundings in these places along with the social media combination
#setinthestreet Justin Bettman definitely wanted to draw attention to his works
that were already placed on busy walkways.
When zoomed in the scene gives a very closed off and complete room feel.
2] what are the
artist’s conceptual and/or thematic intents?
Justin Bettman
in collaboration with Gozde Eker chose unconventional places to set up the
scene of rooms located in a home. This
can bring a sense of comfort and attainability to passersby. Justin Bettman wants his experience to be
very accessible and places these “rooms” against walls throughout the city. These rooms are something you may see
everyday however the mood changes when a warm inviting living room is placed in
front of a wall covered in graffiti for example. It gives a different way of looking at
things. All is not crisp, clean, and
well put together as it may appear and that’s the beauty of these photographs.
3] how do you
respond to these choices and intents?
I enjoyed
viewing Justin Bettman’s pieces. Any
artist that uses what he or she has available, makes the best of it, and does a
professional and well-executed job at it has truly achieved something
great. The choices that both gentlemen
chose to make made for interactive and interesting pieces. Dependent upon where the scene was set up,
the lifespan of it was either long or short, allowing for people that wouldn’t
have this opportunity any other time to be the star in their own photograph
however they wanted to in an unconventional setting.
