1. Ed Templeton is a professional skateboard company owner and a contemporary artist. In the above photos, Templeton used a film camera and used the natural lighting and shadows in his shots, as well as, depth of field. Templeton's photos spanned over a day in the busy setting of Huntington Beach, California. In doing so, Templeton gets a wide variety of different subjects for his shots. For example, the first photo focuses on a man bearing a cross, walking through a busy environment. Next, he focused on a girl standing next to the railing of the pier during the sunset, choosing to focus on the girl, while using the setting sun's natural light to reflect on his face and chest. Lastly, the photo of the boy lying alone on the beach as the tide washes towards him, uses the reflection of the sun on the water and on the boy.
2. The design behind the photographs is focused around the Huntington Beach area where Templeton resides. In creating a series of photographs in the busy area, Templeton engages in many different subjects at a time. Choosing to shoot the photos using film, he creates a sense of realism that makes a viewer see the photo for what the setting was at the given moment it was taken.
3. I am very interested in Templeton's use of film photography in his series, Huntington Beach. I feel that film photography is not being used as much anymore by photographers. Therefore, when I do see film photos, I appreciate the use of them due to the change from film to digital photos. I also appreciate the use of black and white photos Templeton used in the busy atmosphere. I go to Huntington Beach once or twice a year to visit family, and observing the subjects in the photos is very true. When visiting Huntington Beach, one will never expect to see the same thing, there is a wide variety of people both coming and going in such a small setting.
