Born and raised in Shiga and currently working in Tokyo, this Japanese photographer has earned rave reviews with her simple but beautiful approach to taking photographs. (With a name like Kawauichi, I hope you didn't think she was from New York.)
She has many works and many books, but my eye was drawn to her stunning collection called Illuminance.
In it, Rinko explores the physical boundaries of illuminated objects, either by using natural light sources (glare from the sun, reflections, lightning) or providing her own (candles, lighters, flashlights) to draw out the unusual qualities of items and places bathed in bright light.
Illuminance spoke to me the most because of the flow of the photographs, and because of their delicate, ethereal qualities.
