Ellen Mary Mark is an American photographer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She began using the 20x40 Polaroid Camera in 1995. Ever since then, she has often been comfortable using this specific camera. There are a total of 16 collections of her work. These artworks are displayed at galleries and museums worldwide. Her artwork mainly consists of advertising, photojournalism and portraiture assignments.  Her style of photography is addressed to social issues; for example, drug addiction, prostitution, homelessness and loneliness.
The portraits that Ms. Mark takes are mainly in black and white, which gives us a sense of an ever evolving timeframe.  Her work is simple yet speaks volume.  One can see the black, white and grey in her work.  She allows her audience to select whatever mood that want while reviewing her black and white photography.  You can see the contract of the shadow and texture in her black and white work.  It is a sense of seeing the picture in the raw by the use of the black and white images.   Her pictures speak to me while it remains me of old photographs that I have seen at my grandparents’ home.  These three images speak to me as it shows various expressions of what people may go through in life, whether it is happy, sad, or just emotionless.
I absolutely love Ms. Mark’s artwork. However, these three photos captured my attention the most. If there was anything I could take from these photos, I would want to be able to capture these moments in time in a heartfelt way like Ms. Mark has done. I believe her photographs should be looked at as individual images, able to stand alone and tell a complete story.
