Olivia Beard Weekly Post

Sally Mann

Sally Mann is a famous American- born Photographer with an excellent eye in capturing not only the image she wants to portray to the world, but also the attention of the world looking at the her image(s). She was born in Lexington, VA in 1951, and is known for her art in capturing the life and culture of the "American South." I find her work eye- catching due to many reasons; one, being that her images have such clarity to what the images are, well most of them. The quality and focus on her images are just lovely, especially being black and white; which can sometime limit the effectiveness and detail of the piece. Two, being the majority of the pictures with children models in them are in fact her own children. Three, would have to be the deal of controversy taking place in her images. Although society may frown upon the idea of a child, looking as the age of 12 or so, smoking, one cant help but want to look and understand. The idea that she has the "balls" to have her own children model in such controversial manors and portray it as art, is intriguing, yet twisted, and still I just can't help but look and admire it.
