Sarah McCollough Weekly Post #7

Barbara Kasten has been working as a photographer since the 1970s. She uses many different types of mediums to convey her art. Kasten utilizes color and space to create works that are moving to the viewer. Many of her pieces incorporate abstract elements. This is very prevalent in her collection “Constructs Series”. She uses the 20x24 camera to capture colorful, abstract elements.
I thought this collection was interesting for multiple reasons. It was insightful to see how a Polaroid camera could be used by professional photographers, especially using the 20x24 Polaroid. This camera is now located in Cambridge, MA. It has been used by well-known photographers and subjects. Like a regular Polaroid camera, this camera produces “instant images” However, they are 20x24’’ inches. This camera requires use of specific techniques.  For example, In Kasten’s work, she had to use a different exposure for the effect she wanted. I really like how she created a beautiful and captivating photograph despite not illustrating a specified subject matter.
