Kate Matthews
Kate Matthews was born in New Albany, Indiana on August 13, 1870. Suffering from bad vision and sickness as a child, she was home schooled while her seven siblings went to school. Kate was introduced to photography by her brother in law and soon because very interested in taking photos. With the technological advancements in photography during her years as a photographer, she still chose to use traditional means for taking pictures. Matthews used big bellow-style cameras with glass plate negatives, black hoods, and tripods. She enjoyed the process of taking pictures and working in the darkroom.
Her attention to detail and light is evident in her photos. With few women interested in photography during her time, she was a trailblazer for many future female photographers and won numerous awards. Kate's photos were used in numerous magazines and advertisements. She photographed a wide variety of subjects including people, landscapes and buildings. Her work can currently be seen in Museums nationwide.
