Bri Picone - Weekly Post 5.3

Lauren Wilkins

1)  Lauren Wilkins is a collage artist and analog photographer.  She collages her images by removing and adding elements, such as cutting out figures and pasting cut outs on top of her images.  She often leaves figures faceless or covers their faces or cuts out a figure entirely from an image.

2)  These photos are from her Anxiety series.  Wilkins creates these images to understand anxiety as both meaningful and destructive.  She sees romanticized ideals in the snapshots of strangers and she views them as unattainable.  Her images also represent life choices that she fears and desires such as marriage, motherhood, and the responsibilities accompanying them.

3)  I find Wilkins' work compelling and strange.  Her images are mysterious and I like how she combines color and black and white.  I feel like there is a sense of the unknown and a sense of longing to understand the missing figures and their relationship with the other figures in the photos.
