Paul Strand
Paul was one of the OG photographers that worked his butt off to have photography seen as an art form. Learning from one of the greats Alfred Stieglitz his work was cut out for him. He continued in the foots of his mentor and proceeded to make some of the most incredible shots I have ever seen. His keen sense for abstract photography is unlike anything else I've ever seen. Capturing light and shadows in ways that make our world a little bit more unbelievable. He caught many moments that we see everyday but over look them and he pushed them into our focus.
Strand's use of black and white is just as powerful arguably more as many of the color photographs that we see today. He is able to capture the light in a way that your eyes is almost able to see the color anyways. The blacks are bold and serious as the white dances around the frame and makes known the subjects. His figures in his photography most of the time are dark and unrecognizable and allow the viewer to almost place themselves as the subject inside the frame.
Paul Strand has radically influenced my photography and will continue to influence my photography for years to come. He has taught me to look for the things that we see everyday and to photograph them and make it into something that the world needs to see. I have learned that in the shadows we can find some of the most incredible stories of not only objects but whatever we want to make of it. Paul Strand will continue to make a mark on my photography for years to come.
