Kat Hennessy Weekly Post [Week 10]

Ralph Euguene Meatyard

Ralph Euguene Meatyard made silver gelatin prints. He did a series of photographs where he purposefully kept his camera out of focus, then moved on to trying to completely abstract objects, so that only the basic shapes and tones are clear. He also did a series of motion blurred photographs in which the objects are fairly ascertainable, but not with no real clarity.

Meatyard became fascinated with Zen Buddhism. He began to take their principle of objects having other meanings than their physical appearance, and made pictures where the objects in his photographs are unidentifiable. Instead the viewer can now make their own interpretations and create his images into whatever they see. In a strange way, this makes photographs of seemingly random and unrelatable objects feel much more personal. Every person will see something very different based on their own experiences, visions, and subconscious mind.
