For her series Rodeo Queens, Brooklyn-based photographer Gabriela Herman captures the inner world of Miss Rodeo America hopefuls. These are a group of twenty-seven young women competing to become Western royalty. Each of them from small towns along the Western United States, the women travel to Las Vegas during December’s Rodeo Week, joining a flock of cowboys gathering for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
Garbriela was able to get within this unique circle of women who are all competing for the same goal. Her photographs show the various angles in which it takes to become a Rodeo Queen that most people might not know about or be able to see. Her use of light and color throughout this series is captivating. She is also able to use the motion from the events to create effective, and dynamic images.
