Don Smith is an American Photographer and book writer, who
started his carrier with sports photography, as a contract photographer for Sports
Illustrated now. Also he work has been published in a variety of different
publications worldwide. He mainly deals
with landscape photography, which is also what he teaches for workshops across
the country. As for his camera equipment he uses he Canon 1DMKIV, 1DX, and
5DMKIII. He dose also use filters,
flashes, multiple lenses and a tripod. Quoted
by Smith, “My inspiration is fed by just simply being in nature and allowing it
to seep into my soul” (interestingphotographers.com). From this statement I can
only assume that he waits until he can develop some kind of deeper connection before
he even tries to make a photograph.
In the three landscape images above Smith conveys a sense of
surrealism. I can’t say what he does exactly to capture these pictures, but they
are all phenomenal images that hold a since of magic and in some cases almost
look fake. One example of this would be the first image of the canon with
falling clouds while lightning is striking. I for one defiantly would like to
know what it took to make this image happen, so that I may even apply it to something
in the future. Throughout his portfolio his work ranges from classic sunset
landscapes to images that don’t even look of this earth. I can only assume that
taking amazing images such as these takes a lot of time and dedication, but Don
Smith has proven that it can be worth it.
