Primarily, Diana Kim uses a monochrome color setting in her
photographs, although there are a few in her collection in which she does use
color. Most likely she uses digital format for her work, although she has not
stated what her preferred method was. Her focus is mainly people, who are
homeless on the streets of Honolulu, Hawaii.
Kim’s work is very insightful, as it shows that Honolulu is
a place that is not strictly paradise like how many people around the world
associate Hawaii with. It has a darker side than its face value, a trait that
many cities share. I believe she chose to photograph the homeless of the city
because she herself saw her own father laying on the streets in a cardboard
house, and helped him on a road to recovery.
I find her work to be very interesting, due to the fact that
it shows a different part of what people generally associate with cities and
other places. It is a true eye opener for those who assume Hawaii is a perfect
place.
