Iris van der Zee
Iris's work is a collection of Greek themes and the overall emotion of despair. She collects these emotions to allow the viewer to feel uncomfortable. Through out her work she used performance, paper, sculpture, and other mixed medias to vocalize her message. She has used several pieces to go after ISIS, 9/11, and other world traumas.
In these images she used the absense of body parts to make the viewer feel uncomfortable. This can be seen in the first two photos. Especially when it comes to how the hand is placed in the second photo. The viewer can either determine that the hand position is leading to the though of the person being double jointed, or that they are missing two fingers. In most of her work she takes violence into perspective, this then raises the idea of when the art is actually finished.
Who looking at these works I am drawn in with how the artist used the sense of hands to determine the idea of "violence." I start to think about how she would use other body parts to show violence. In my thought process I feel that she used hands because of how violence is usually used with the hands. When looking at her performance art works, I can then determine why she did the last photo. The violence she uses towards her sculptures shows her meaning in a new way.
