Traer Scott
If you wanted to commission someone to make pictures of your precious cat or dog, Traer Scott would be the person to go to. Her work focuses on animals, and these works in particular are of nocturnal animals. This brings me back to the portrait study Kevin Horan did on goats. Both artists have more of an appreciation for animals than most people do.
When you make an image of an isolated animal instead of its natural habitat, it evokes a different mood from the viewer. The animals appear to have a light shining on them from an artificial light source, with extremely dark surroundings or else Scott wouldn't have been able to highlight just the animal like she wanted. When Scott put the animal out of its environment, she figuratively put the animal on a pedestal. The cat or the hamster are more than just a characteristic of a landscape photograph, they alone have texture and color that make for a great photo too.
I, personally, really enjoy looking at these photos because I love animals and they are very well executed. The seclusiveness of the animal created with the rich black background is what pulls me into the pictures.
