Ed Walker
Since our most recent project is based on portraits and landscape photography, I chose the "Spotlight" project by Ed Walker. Originally a street photographer, now Walker specialized in up close, candid photos of people in New York. It's almost like a sport to capture the right portrait at the right moment on New York city streets because people are constantly on the move. One of the ways Walker approaches this problem is that he predicts the next movement of the people he makes pictures of. For these pictures he switched from his 35mm to a 50mm camera. Walker also uses a shallow depth of field to "pull individuals out from the crowd."
While on the busy streets of New York city, Walker was able to successfully show the audience the isolation of people in everyday life.
The images where the subject is wearing dark clothes really works for me, out of all the pictures in the project "Spotlight." I really appreciate the contrast of lights and darks created by the sun and his shallow depth of field to create that isolated feel. The emotion Walker captures in these people is very interesting to look at against the dark background.
