Steven Burton

Steven Burton's portraiture of tattooed men with before and after images create compelling stories.
For this project, he used Photoshop for the second image to remove the tattoos and to see the change. The portraits are posed and most of them are with the subject looking directly at the viewer.

Society has this stereotype of individuals with visible tattoos on their bodies and Steven Burton was bringing that to light in this project. He also brought a different perspective from the subject with the tattoos and how they feel about them. It brings up questions about the way the individual may feel about their tattoos and if they are proud of them. The different people in the portraits were interviewed to see what they had to say about their tattoos. These images open your eyes to the subject and regrets.

I think it was a dynamic concept to have before and after images of tattooed men. It is a good way to get people to realize their own natural prejudices. People may be trying to make better lives for themselves but their tattoos get in the way of that.
