Clarissa Stanley - Artist Post 3

Francesca Woodman

1.) The pictures are in black and white with little contrast but rich in textures. Blurs and transparency seem to be useful tools to the artist. Woodman also seems to be controlling light, layering and using movement to her advantage in her photographs.
2. Woodman's photography seems to have a dark and ghostly feel with the subjects being human, female in particular. Her set or surroundings appears to be raw but have so much detail in the walls with cracks, tears, rocks, mirrors and tattered ribbon, as well as contrast in light throughout the pieces that make it rich in grey tones. The manipulations in the picture seem to be so slight as if they are really appearing in the picture, this is evident in the last one
3. I like the series and how it relates to the story behind the artist, how her keenness for the dark and eerie idea of ghost and if there is an afterlife is clear through her pictures and in her life.
