Mary McCarter- Weekly Artist Post 3

Max Natkiel

Natkiel is working in black and white, but also adds marks of yellow and blue to each photo. There are lines obviously made with these yellow and blue marks like x's and o's as well as squares and thick lines that go over the subject matter themselves. They are portraits done in full body length, each subject has some sort of different expression on their face. There is also the films outlines still present in the look of these photos.

All of the subjects seem to be in 80s rock attire as if this could be a photo booth of some sort and were asked to show their personality in one photo. The first is more of a snapshot of what that person was doing (smoking a cigarette) whereas the two other photos look very staged and upbeat with more energy in a sense. The mark making also attributes to the type of photo more of a break the rules type because normally you wouldn't want to draw on photos with any mark making or text. It is as though the artist wanted to show his subjects style as well as personality.

I didn't really care for these pictures and I think that why I wanted to choose them to post. I wanted to find something I could look at and have a different perspective then just enjoying the photos. These made me think about different aspects of photography in the mark making, but I though that the marks were just sort of put there because the subject matter is just people making a certain expression or standing a certain way. It is almost like these photos are just drafts to real photos and the mark represent cropping or the x's may represent that a photo should be left out.
