Marlene Wynn - Weekly Artist Post #1

Stanley Kubrick's Photo's of 1940's NYC

  1. Artist Technical Choices
    1.  At the tender age of 17 - by far the youngest photographer there - Stanley worked at the Look Magazine in NYC.  Using NYC and its inhabitants as his main focus, he took many photographs.  Most of the ones I saw on the site linked above were of the everyday worker, and were charming in the glimpses of regular people doing regular things.  But the three photo's above stood out even more to me due to very different they were.
  2.  Artist Conceptual / Thematic Intents
    1.   As stated above most of the photos on his site were of the average work-a-day person.  But if this is the average work day for these three people...WOW.  Was Stanley trying to show a different side to the work world?  One that differed from shoe shining, bus riding, selling hot dogs, or maintaining cars?  Was the normal just TOO normal for these three people?
  3. My Response to Stanley's Intents
    1. First and foremost, I never even knew someone could ride a bike across a high-wire with two people dangling below him.  Who knew???  Outside of that, these photos' interspersed amongst the average showcases just how different they are.  These three people don't seem to have the same boundaries for living life as the "normal" person.  They go full bore at life and seem to enjoy doing so.
