Megan Wingfield -Weekly Post 1

1) Ed Van Der Elsken uses black and white photography. He takes photos up close and personal with his subjects off to the side, pulling the viewers eye to the left or right. Elsken uses mirrorsin the majority of his photos to create bigger depth within his work. There is also sense of movement in his photography by how his subjects are positioned.

2) The couple at the top show happiness and liveliness. You can tell that they are having fun together and can see how fond they are of each other by the way the man is holding her. In the middle picture I believe the woman is looking in the mirror at herself. In reality she is covered up and seems calm but her alter ego in the mirror shows herself naked and shaking her head, having fun, loving herself. The last photo I chose shows a woman kissing a mirror with her eyes closed. I assume that the artist wanted to photograph her like this so it would appear that she was kissing herself. This photo portrays that its important to love yourself first in order to be happy with yourself.

3) I love the photography that Ed Van Der Elsken creates because there is so much interpretation and meaning to his pieces of work. These photographs deal with how you see yourself contrasting with how others see you. Even though it is not obvious, there is an internal theme of love throughout these photos by how his subjects aren't necessarily smiling but you can feel whatthey feel in that moment through the actions they are making.
