Bri Picone - Weekly Post 12

Jane Lena Schulman

1)  Jane Lena Schulman works in the darkroom to create silver gelatin prints.  She uses long exposures and light is a featured element in her images.  She also uses methods of double exposure.  Schulman uses a square format and her images contain a large range of tones and contrast.

2)  Schulman's work explores the psychological and metaphorical world of the self.  She uses the human form and a dress form to explore the idea of persona and transformation.  In this series Family Inheritances I & II Schulman contemplates her place in her family and her place in the world.  She aims to express the unconscious and is interested in representing the psychological and internal landscape of the human experience.

3)  Schulman's work really speaks to me.  I love her long exposures and her approach to exploring the psyche.  I think her choice to use the dress form as a mode of transformation and to represent a persona is successful.

  1. I like how her photos turn out, the double exposure works well for her.
