Mollie Schaidt Weekly Post 12

Justin Dingwall

  1. Justin Dingwall is a photographer from South Africa who created this series called Albus with the intention of spreading awareness and acceptance of albinism--deficiency of pigment in the skin. In many countries people with albinism are hunted by witch doctors who believe their limbs have supernatural powers. Their lives are not only threatened, but they are discriminated against.
  2. Dingwall approach to this series is taking something that is "different", and creating beauty out of it. He uses soft lighting against a pure white background. He uses metaphors of baptism, rebirth, and metamorphosis. Dingwall tries to break through the myths and show the serenity of albinism.
  3. My personal response to these images are that I think they have a calming sense to them. Simple and beautiful. I love the technical use of white on white makes the images very pure and almost shocking to look at, but not overpowering.
