Catherine Meadows Weekly Post 11

Anne Betton was born in Nancy, France and has been passionate about art since she was young. She currently lives and works in Paris. This series in particular deals with mental health. She started this project in 2014 and I believe she is still working on it today.

In this series, she attempts to capture the intense emotion and harsh reality of dealing with a mental illness. She found subjects who have been touched by mental illnesses in some way and took portraits of them. With some of the shots being candid and others posed, she in many ways portrays the stigma surrounding mental illness. The way I see this is, considering that it is often believed that "If people look happy and smile, then they are genuinely happy." The posed portraits show that people struggling with an illness can hide their true emotion by simply smiling. The candid shots seem to dive more into the reality of what it's like to deal with a mental illness.
