Logan Willis - Weekly Artist Post #14

Kelsy Gossett

1) Kelsy Gossett in this series called "Wake Up" focused on taking pictures to people that were just waking up, sleeping, or in that dazed state of mind right after someone wakes up. Her technical approach includes a shallow or deep depth of field depending on the environment each person is being photographed in. The people are the objects being focused on in all of the photos and it looks as if she may be placing herself in a certain spot in each room for the best lighting or even bringing in a light source or turning the lights on in each person's bedroom.

2) Kelsy clearly wants to capture these people's emotions at a specific time in their day. It looks as if in some of the photos she even wants to catch the dogs off guard. She seems to have set up the scene though as the people are looking at her, the room is still and the frames. While these aren't necessarily the portrait we're used to seeing, they are still portraits as the emotions in their faces are being captured and also every part of the people being photographed are in focus.

3) I was truly drawn to Kelsy Gossett's photos in this series mainly because of the idea behind this specific series. I like that Kelsy took the risk to go into each person's home and ask to photograph them as soon as they wake up, while still in bed. I also enjoy that Kelsy included people and pets to contrast with each other. She also either chose to contrast the people with their environment such as the colored blankets, pillows, and patterns being used. I enjoyed how realistic and unplanned the people's emotions were throughout this series of Kelsy's photographs.
