These photos were taken by the famous photographer Mary Ellen Mark. She based these photos in New York city. She most likely used a 20 x 24 Polaroid camera. The first picture shows a woman holding her crying baby in front of a beach with crashing waves in the background. She probably asked the woman to hold her baby and look straight ahead while she stood 4 feet away from her. The second photo shows two grief-stricken boys in front of what appears to be housing projects. She probably took the picture without telling these boys a thing. The final photo shows two children, of Indian descent, cuddled together. They are both wearing what appears to be Indian garb. She probably asked the kids to pose as if they were sad and depressed.
These photos were all representative of the struggle and hardship that most city dwellers go through. The first picture with the baby shows helplessness, being restrained and held back from what would and should make it happy. The two boys who are crying and bowing their heads looked as though they had lost a loved one and are completely aware of the fact that they are never coming back. The third photo shows that there is strength in unity, however there is also weakness in diversity.
The first photo makes me feel as though the baby is seeing something being taken away from her that she doesn't want to let go; and the mother, with a pained look on her face, must let her child kick and scream as that sliver of hope escapes them. The second photo incites the same sadness I had experienced when my dog passed away. I felt helpless and was on the brink of losing my faith. The third photo shows a bit of hope but it is also eclipsed by sadness, and adversity.
