Marlene Wynn - Weekly Post #12

Don Hurzeler

  1. Artist Technical Choices
      1.  In the first photo I believe that Don used a slower shutter speed, allowing us to see the misty movement of the water.  The second two would have been with a faster shutter speed, especially the bird as they flap their wings very rapidly and there is no trace of motion blur to me.
  2.  Artist Conceptual / Thematic Intents
      1. In the first photo, the waves crash upon the rocky cliffs, sending up a shower of misty spray.  The sun glinting off the far right spray is wonderful (and a very lucky catch!).  Though the sky and the water within the rocky cove is a lovely blue, there are enough pinks, peaches, yellows and greens scattered throughout to keep this picture from becoming monochromatic.  And, the way the sun caresses only certain parts of the cliff side is wonderful.
      2. Which is my favorite part here?  The intense fiery colors of the sunset or the ethereal, fog-looking water?  It's hard to say.  Such an amazing contrast between bright and muted, intense and gentle, fire and water.  I'm not sure if it is the sky reflecting in the water or the flow of the water that makes it look like its moving, but what a wonderful effect!!
      3. What a happy looking little bird!  The shadows and the contrasting sky all contribute to showcasing him so nicely.  And, that streak of bright red under his wing...what a fun addition to this bright litt
  3. My Response to the artist's Intents
    1. All three pictures are simply breathtaking to me.  The mixture of light and color are masterful, leaving me wanting to see more.  And, even though the bird is surrounded by green leaves, there is enough sharp blue sky to help minimize that effect.
