1. In this set, Yosemite, Alan Ross captures huge landscapes in black and white. He has very good exposure, you can see everything in all the shadows and highlights, nothing is blown out. He also uses a very deep depth of field, you can see everything in these photos.
2. Alan Ross was an assistant to the great Ansel Adams. That is very obvious when you look at his work, which very closely resembles the work of his mentor. I believe that his thematic intents were the same as Ansel's, to portray the beauty of the American North-West.
3. I believe he did a great job portraying his intents. To my eyes, I wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between his work and Ansel's work. They both are the same location and the same style. I feel like Alan Ross' work was kind of a tribute or extension to his teacher's work. The way they both completely disregarded color, but still captured the immense beauty of these landscapes is just plain brilliance.
