Shane Ambrose Weekly Artist Post
These photographs by Michael Massaia depict different ice cream pops melted on a black surface. The pictures are dependent on the contrast created by the background, which gives all of the emphasis to the colors of the ice cream. Massaia also creates different patterns with each of the ice cream pops using some sort of abstract, yet mostly symmetrical shapes.
The message that Massaia is trying to convey with these photos is to show the delusion that exists even in something as innocuous as an ice cream pop. He uses the ice cream as a symbol for the younger generation, who are commonly perceived to be naive and blissful, to show that they too can be misunderstood.
I think that Massaia has made a very interesting and convincing project with these photos. I can definitely see the underlying tone he is trying to convey and I think that it is very impactful and encourages another, more deeply-seated look on seemingly innocent situations.
