Stanley Kubrick
1) When Kubrick was working for LOOK magazine between 1945 and 1950, he photographed life in New York City in the 40s. His photos are a blend of composition, light, mystery, and drama.
2) Kubrick's photos show a variety of subjects including Broadway actresses, Dwight D. Eisenhower at Columbia University, and circus performers. Much of his photography was of nightclubs, street photography, and sporting events. Kubrick was only 17 when he took these photos. His photos capture the pathos of everyday life in a way you might not expect from a 17 year old.
3) I think Kubrick's work is really interesting because it gives us a glimpse into everyday life, but in a way that excites the viewer. He achieves this through composition and light to create drama and tension in his photos. For example, the light in the photo of the girl with the dolls is so stark that it creates a feeling of drama which is accentuated by where she is placed in the composition.
