Joseph Colon weekly post 2
1. Katy used a very portraiture approach to this series. She used a flash and a white background to give the pictures a more formal, and almost model look i would say. her measured but dramatic lighting frequently pointed up the mismatch between self-image and self-possession, and grounded that disjuncture in the difference between an interior and exterior conception of the body.
2. Grannan’s subjects are about reconciling oneself to the human body, and the myriad ways in which it is traversed by our own frustrated dreams, and the gaze of others. Her portraits are a representation of Dorthea Lang's photos that she took of people during the great depression.
3. These images are very captivating to me. The way in which she used the light to reflect what they were feeling, or somewhat use the light in the sense to expose them, or show them in a new light than what they are used to was done very well.
