1. Photographer Katy Grannan in her series, "Street Theatre and Broken Dreams: Boulevard" uses harsh bright light when capturing her subjects. The sharpness, contrast, and brightness in these images is not the typical beautiful lighting photographers try to find/create, but it matches the subjects of the images. The direct sunlight reflects off the white wall in the background creating a even more intense glare.
2. The connection between the photographer and the subject is more than a snapshot image; which you would think at first glance because of the expressions/movement shown. The lighting and sharpness of these images were intentional showing every flaw, or quirk of each person. Katy Grannan wanted to create images about the each encounter she had with each subject. Grannan wanted to record the descendants of the dream-seekers of the American West-- "not only illuminate the West, but the people who sought it."
3. The way I respond to these images is that I find them interestingly beautiful if that is a way to put it. The technique in which the images were taken highlights the personality--not only the person. It gives a new perspective on how to look at the theme of the series-- the harsh life of the dreamers. The technical elements and the subjects are not so beautiful, but I feel that's what makes it beautiful. It gives touch to reality of the situations that can be covered up by a thought of a dream.
