Francesco Merlini

Francesco Merlini has an interesting series of black and white images titled Farang. His work has high contrast, dark, and grainy features. He uses a flash to create mood and shoots primarily in a portrait format.

Merlini's photojournalist style has a story telling element that is theatrical. His monochromatic compositions avoid pure blacks and whites and focus on a wide range of grey. The dirty whites and muddy blacks give an abstract feel to his work.

Merlini's work reminds me of Diane Arbus. The boy dressed in a costume is not what I would usually expect from a child playing dress up. It is as if the joy of a child's play has been stripped down to a purely aesthetic form.
