Joseph Colon Weekly Post 4

Jamel Shabazz

1. Jamel Shabazz used a Nikon film camera, and what i'm assuming is either a 24mm or a 35mm wide angle lens. to capture street culture, and fashion during the early 1980s. A wide variety of his pictures are all taken on the street, and are lit by natural light, and taken mostly during the day. Some of the pictures have a very unique contrast in the colors, that give them a very gritty look that coincides with the areas in which the pictures were taken.

2. Jamels pictures are a very unique take on what was happening during the early 1980s with Hip Hop fashion, and music. I enjoy photographers who give you an inside look into a world that you may have never known about. His pictures have a very beautiful quality in them, such as the one with the man and the pit bull. It almost reminds be of a picture of two people dancing, or almost figure skating. Its so beautiful but so gritty.

3. Growing up ive always loved 80s Hip Hop, and fashion culture. Jamel Shabazz has also been one of my favorite photographers for quit a while as well. His work is a journey of what is was like to live during that time. It was the era of the Bboy (break dancers), graffiti, and just everything cool. His work focuses on people, and place in a way that you can imagine what it was like to live during those times.
