Brian Duffy's technical choices are his preference of using a Leica camera. He pays close attention to detail as well as light and shadow. He uses both black and white photography and color successfully in his fashion photographs.
In the three photographs selected above (as well as plenty of others) he tends to make the picture more about the clothes than the model. Most of his models faces are covered which creates a sense of mystery and allure. Duffy tends to overexpose and change levels to create contrast. None of the above photographs seem to reflect a traditional space that a fashion photo would be taken yet all three scenes work well. My favorite is the first one on the ballerina bar and top hat.
I really appreciate Duffy's body of work. His eye for detail and attention to framing always makes for a great photograph. It seems like these three and most of his fashion photographs have a timeless feel to them. He started out his career as a fashion photographer for Vogue magazine and always shot David Bowie's iconic Aladdin Sane album cover.
