Feven Asghedom - Artist Post #9

Markus Hartel

Markus Hartel is a Street photographer. In these photographs he under exposes frame and seems to only use whatever natural light he has. He shoots with a Leica camera and sticks to black and white in this series.
Hartel's work has great contrast. The three photographs above all show different scenes in New York City. None of the pictures seems to be made, they all seem to be just captured in the moment. Each photograph has many people in it but the viewer is led through the frame and moved to focus on one off centered person in each frame. The all have a very gritty and real feeling to them. Hartel considers his work to be documenting truth and looking through his work I see what he means.
I like his work but i don't think the under exposed approach works successfully in every frame. My favorite shot is the 2nd one from the three i choose to post. It made me remember being young and having so much fun doing the simplest things like playing in water. Even through he doesn't capture the entire face or expression of any specific person I feel they each evoke emotion through body language.
