Lieko Shiga

1)   Much of Lieko Shiga’s images are manipulated in some way in order to achieve the surreal effect that she strives to achieve. In the series Canary, she greatly manipulates the image by either setting up the scene, or while in the dark room during production. Much of her work is inspired by Japanese folklore, and mysticism.

2)   Her photos in this series are mostly done after dark, where she takes advantage of the darkness. In the first image, titled Wedding Veil, she placed paper blossoms onto the tree. The second image titled ‘How to Fly through the Sky is another example of photo manipulation. Whale Tears, being the last image, is yet another example of her work. She uses colors that complement each other making the images more vibrant and energetic to look at.

3)   Through her images in the series Canary, she shows that cameras can capture something that might otherwise be lost. Even the title Canary is based on when canaries were brought into goldmines to help miners know when there were unsafe gases in the air.
