Melissa Breyer
1) Melissa Breyer is a street photographer based in New York City. She works primarily in black and white trying to capture spontaneous images of people on the streets of the city. Breyer often uses a shallow depth of field or slow shutter speed to create blur and emphasize the main subject. She usually frames her subjects by windows, mirrors or patches of light.
2) The artist comes from a background in painting that’s
why she is used to expressing herself through portrayals of others. Breyer got inspired by many things that she experienced in her life. She was influenced by such writers as Edeth Wharton, Lewis
Carroll and also some cinematographic work. However mostly she finds inspiration in the
city itself and people who lives in it. Since she
got her first serious camera she felt drown to photographing strangers without
being noticed. Breyer loves the chaotic life of New York City and its people
and wants to capture interesting moments so she could share how she perceives
it. Some images that she takes become a document of the city and also a
personal souvenir of her journey through this world.
3) I've been having an interest in street photography for a while. I found out that it is more appealing to me to take pictures of a changing scene, when you see something that you like and you go after this moment, rather than taking picture of a fixed scene. Although I like color, black and white images speak louder to me. I agree with the artist when she says: " black and white is elegant
and shows off the structure and choreography of an image. It lets the
story and the elements speak for themselves". I have noticed that colorful pictures attracts people's eye more that black and white. However I think that using black and white is perfect if you want to make your point, separate the main object from the rest or make it stand out.
