Mary Jane Morris - Weekly Post: Part 1

Ron Van Dogen, born in 1961, studied photography at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Prior to photography school, he studied health science and biology in The Netherlands. Van Dongen combines his love for science and art. His backyard is filled with exotic flowers, which he specifically plants to photograph. Ron Van Dogen's photos of flowers have a simple composition. He often crops the flower and adds a single colored background, which comes from the flower itself.
Van Dogen's prints of flowers is captivating. His color choices are pristine and create an overall balance to the photo. His compositions are typically symmetrical or radial, with the center of the flower in the center of the photograph. The simplicity of each photograph creates an intimate feeling. To me, each flower tells a story. This can relate to the struggles and confusions of everyday life--with the twisting of petals stems--that causes us to second guess which path we are bound to take.
Although some people may view the flower as "over-photographed," I personally love taking pictures of flowers. I would like to replicate the simple compositions of Van Dongen's photos. Along with that, I would like to experiment with a simple background for these future flower images I may take. I would strive to create a similar intimate feeling like this photographer's.
