Simone McPhail - Weekly Artist Post 4

In this series of photos, Fitch often uses a shallow depth of field to focus the subject of the photos. The girls are often in focus in the foreground while the background is blurry enough to tell what is in the background but with very little detail. Another technical choice that stands out is the choice to use extra lighting to give the girls and extra glow. This choice is especially evident in the middle photo. I think this adds to the majestic and "princess" feel of the photos.

Blake Fitch explores the "princess phase" most young girls go through as young children, idolizing characters seen in disney movies. These photos take place for the most part outside in a natural setting. This setting is quite contrary to the domestic, civilized and extravagant connotation that the disney princesses come with. The girls are also not totally done up with costume make-up, but mostly acting as a hanger for the dresses they're modeling. Not that the dresses are ill fitting or out of place but it does seem that the girls are playing dress-up, as the title of the series "Dress Rehearsal" suggests.

I enjoy the theme of these photos but I'm not totally sure of Fitch's stance on the issue tackled with this series. Aesthetically, I enjoy the setting and colors of the photos. But compared to my post a couple of weeks ago with the young gentleman with autism, the conclusion is a bit abstract. In the end though, maybe the point is for me to simply think about my stance on the issue rather than the photographer's.
