Holli Turner - Weekly Artist Post

Dirk Rees

For the portraits of the people that are “zoomed out” in reference to focal length, I believe the artist used his long lens or whichever is the smallest number of mm on his camera.  The larger the aperture is the shorter the depth of field will be.  For those photographs with a “blurry” background I believe the aperture if F2 or F4.

Dirk Rees spent time with tribe members who refer to themselves as “Samburu Warriors”.  Rees intends on documenting many indigenous tribes.  He wanted to capture their semi-nomadic lives and in his words “capture their essence, spirit, and soul.”

These photographs are beautiful.  The vibrant colors against the dark rich colors of the tribesmen’s skin provide a great contrast.  I enjoyed viewing the beading as well.  Both the photograph taking and the traditional wardrobe of the Samburu Warriors appears to have been time consuming and well executed.
