What are the artist's technical choices?
Evans chose to photograph America by taking pictures while riding a train. Her shutter speed seems to be a little slower than 1/60 of a second but not too much because some photos are still in focus. The photos are during the day at all different times. She uses the movement of the train to create a different feeling to the photo, as if you were the one seeing these landscapes go by.
What are the artist's conceptual and/or thematic intents?
In her biography she discusses how she wanted to photograph America but didn't know how to until she took a photo on the train. The freedom and lose of control due to the movement of the train creates a beautiful photo. The fact the some things are in focus while others are not draws your attention to the focused parts first of course but then adds flare when you see the movement.
How do you respond to these choices and intents?
I think Evans did a wonderful job of creating a new way of seeing America. Not only seeing the beautifully photographed landscapes but instead add something not so perfect made it perfect. The fact the she chose to take these pictures while on the train gives the viewer a different perceptive on things as if they were the ones seeing it.
