Weekly Artist Post - Joshua Caudell

Barbara Yoshida

1) In this series, Barbara Yoshida's technical decisions are essentially the use of black and white.  She uses contrast and film from a Large Format Camera selects her women to photograph in various situations.  Her choice of film to use is obvious.

2) There's not much of a story to these photos, not that I can find, anyway, Black and white is what makes these pictures stand out.  Each of these photos have different backgrounds that are in focus.  The art of large format film photography is a lost art because many of us photographers uses digital and color.

3) I respond very well to these photos. The decision to abandon a physical subject in order to focus on color is not something that you see every day. People often don't slow down and perceive contrast as light, or see it what it really is.  We take film photography for granted, because we use digital all the time, but the way the Artist pushes the contrast in these photos really makes the viewer stop and see how beautiful they really are.  I also think this is a good example of what to attempt for our present project, except for the fact that we are using color and digital, not film and black and white.
