Dirk Rees
1. Photographer Dirk Rees lived and travelled throughout South Africa. With a passion for the African Continent he decided to capture Africa's most iconic tribes. He documented Kenya warriors know as Samburu Warriors. The Samburu Warriors are a semi-nomadic tribe in Kenya who livelihood dependents on the animals such as cattle and sheep. There are estimated over 150,000 Samburu people living in the central Rift Valley of Kenya.
2. Dirk Rees goal in photographing the warriors was to get to know the tribe on a personal level and not to exploit the men of the tribe. He captured the spirit and soul of the Samburu warriors. He showed how diverse the men of the Samburu people are. He aspires to document as many indigenous tribe that he can before they are forgotten or move on from their ancient traditions to more modern ones.
3. In mainstream media we often see men and women in Africa as hopeless, poor, diseased stricken and in need of a savior from their "uncivilized" ways. In Dirk Rees photographs of the Samburu warriors he show a side of Africa and some of its people that people hardly see in America media. The Samburu warriors and their people are a proud and beautiful people with a rich culture.
