For this collection, Seilder uses analog format, using film,
as well as color. He treats his film negatives with very harsh chemicals, specifically
methyl methacrylate. The main focus of this work is different locations
throughout northern New Jersey, where he is from.
Seilder is trying to convey how the extreme industrialization
of the area affects the surrounding landscape. He uses chemicals that were once
part of a large spill in the region, and used them as an influence in his
photographs. He plans to travel elsewhere to photograph other areas heavily
damaged by pollution.
I was extremely impressed on how Seilder used chemicals,
especially ones that were notable in his area, to manipulate his photographs.
It gives a viewer a look into how industrialization is affecting the areas
nearby, even more that what they had probably known beforehand. I think anyone
who has been to a heavily industrialized area can relate to these photographs.
