1.Sally Mann is a Virginia based photographer most famous for her series of controversial photos tilted: "Immediate Family". During her career she has used about 7 cameras to capture her iconic images. She predominately shoots with a 100 year old 8x10 camera. And most of her lenses are old, dusty, dirty, antique lenses that she's found at local thrift shops, trashcans, and and antique stores. She mostly shoots with a large to ultra large format. She also uses glass plate negatives. All these factors contribute to her photos looking like copies of the Victorian era. They give them a classical feel in a current time.
2.With every picture she's taken in black and white, the subjects, the contrast, and details, we can see her true intentions in her photos. In her "Immediate Family" series, she notes that she wanted to capture the simplicity of her children, and their world before it became complicated. She also says that she chooses to shoot in black in white because their is no distraction when there is absence of color. Her intentions were to capture life,death.memory.history, and place. She makes these statements and references her embodying these aspirations because she's southern. She wanted and still wants her art to convey romanticism. Her intentions are to highlight sentimental situations and also show how haunting and personal life really is.
3.I responded to Manns work with a deep curiosity. It always surprises me but also humbles me by how honest people are. You could see the honesty in her photos. The innocence her children possess was so well documented. Her brilliance to shoot them before life's impurities got to them or got them to think differently gave you a sense of they're freedom. Her work is reflective of the past , a reminder of the present, and a glimpse of the future.
