Megan Wingfield- Weekly Artist Post 6

Steve Smith photographs in all black and white, standing relatively close to all of his subjects. He mostly takes photos of large crowds of people out in public. All of this pictures are real life, and not staged. They are also all taken outside at some point in the morning or afternoon. He uses the sun in the middle of the day as a source to make his photos more interesting by creating multiple shadows in one frame.

The first photo shows a boy looking down, looking as if he is ashamed. There is an older boy next to him crossing his arms looking at him showing how disappointed he is. There are several younger people in the background. The next photo is of a group of women trying to look at something but the sun is in their eyes. The third photo shows a mass of children dressed in cute fun sunglasses and decorative shorts walking toward the same direction. All of these photos represent america and how theres so many people here trying to go about their normal lives. No one in the photos are smiling or really seem happy, showing that the real world is not exactly a fun place.

Steve Smiths work caught my eye because instead of just one or a couple people being photographed, he decided to do masses of people. It is much harder to photograph a bunch of people at once than photographing an object or just one person because it has to all work out and it only works out sometimes by chance. Im sure Smith took hundreds of photos before getting the ones he wanted of his subjects.
