1) Jill Quigley is an Irish photographer that’s
primarily based in Belfast. Although Jill is primarily based in Belfast, I
found one of her projects called “Cottages of Quigley’s Point”. In this
particular project, Jill traveled about an hour or two from Belfast to a place
called Bogstown in Donegal County, Ireland and a few other places that are
primarily small communities, farmland, and empty farmhouses. Jill Quigley’s
technical approach was very different and very interactive. She chose to
splatter paint in the abandoned buildings to almost stage what would or could
have been a party scene. She chose to use bright colors for the paint and also
to use other bright colored items such as string, feathers, etc.
2) While there is no evidence of people in any
of these photos, Jill creates a scene that definitely looks as if there were
people in the scene. She specifically uses bright colored paints as well as
other bright colored arts and crafts items. I think that that this was a good
choice because the bright colors contrasted well with the other neutral colors
that are contained in the background.
3) I feel these pictures are a depiction of
something that just recently took place. They bring back memories of high
school parties for me personally and even some college parties where there are
black lights or color themes such as 80’s parties. I think that these photos
without the bright colors are very plain and some of them disgusting but I
think Jill really has a creative and interactive stroke in all of her pieces of
work from this project. She seems to enjoy brightening the scene while also
causing the viewer to ask tons of questions and become more intrigued in her
pieces. I really loved how Jill stated that many viewers would “wonder what the
hell had happened.” Jill Quigley really stood out as an artist and photographer
to me because she is definitely not just taking pictures; she’s making
pictures.
